During our time within the area, White Nile has constructed and repaired over 15km of a flood barrier dyke from Jalle Village to Maar. This area was previously vulnerable to seasonal flooding and people were constantly at risk of damage to their homes and loss of their crops and cattle.
The dyke has been a great success. During the 2007 wet season, an above average rainfall resulted in what many called “the worst floods in living memory”. The White Nile dyke kept the Jalle to Maar area, one of the most flood prone regions of Jonglei state, relatively dry while large parts of the country were underwater. In discussion with the local communities this is the project that the vast majority of people gave the highest priority to.
Road Building, Repair & Maintenance
White Nile has a dedicated civil works team that is responsible for building and maintaining roads and other construction projects within the area. These works have had a tremendous impact as they have allowed a regular movement of vehicles, supplies and business people in and out of the area.
Airstrip Construction & Maintenance
White Nile built and now maintains two airstrips in the area. These are open all year round and are now used by several NGOs that supply relief food and medicines to the communities within the area.
Construction
A qualified expert builder was employed to oversee and train a team of local masons and carpenters. Brick making machines have been purchased and people trained to make bricks locally.
These newly trained teams have been employed on the White Nile building projects which included works for both the drilling operations and community projects. Some of the works included the construction of the cellar for the drilling operations and the building of the local clinic for the community.
